Green Shirt Umpire Program

The Green Shirt Umpiring Program is a practical umpiring course aimed at developing and training beginner umpires, of all ages, to ultimately attain their National C  badge. Introduced to netball associations in 2007, the program has continued to grow, introducing an increasing number of individuals to umpiring and assisting to develop their umpiring. As an association we are strongly encouraging the more mature athlete to enrol. Coaches, parents and spectators alike are encouraged to come and try their hand.

The program runs twice a year in Winter and Spring. It aims to

  • Make new officials easily identifiable, so that they are easy to recognise and support
  • Raise awareness and increase the recognition and support of new officials
  • Assist in reducing the pressure and lessening abuse and conflict directed towards new officials
  • Create a culture of support for these new officials through the education of players, spectators, coaches and the media

Enrollment for the Spring Season is now open!

All umpires new to the program MUST attend two training sessions to ensure that umpires are being allocated a match in accordance with their ability, thus preventing animosity between players/coaches and officials. The training program is held over two consecutive sessions on the 30th September and 1st October 2017 from 3pm – 7pm held at the WDNA club rooms. The cost of these 8 hours of training is $40. Which is payable prior to the first session.

Part of the training sessions include match play and umpires will be assessed on their ability to control and manage a game effectively. If the umpire is not deemed ready at this stage (please note this match play is on the second day after the training is given) we will recommend that the umpire receives further training before coming into the program. We do not run a train on program in Spring.

If you were a member of the Green Shirt Program in Winter 2017, you are not required to attend this training session but can apply directly into the program, click here

Following the initial training cost the program itself costs $80. This includes training each week whilst umpiring games through umpire coaches and subsidized badging costs. Umpires are paid each week for the games that they umpire. The green polo shirt is borrowed to the umpires, but if they obtain their National C Badge they are given a white squad shirt to keep.

Each participant must have completed both the online Foundation Umpire Education course (Formerly Level 1) which costs $30 and an online Theory Exam which is free.

Each umpire must also have a white skirt (shorts if male), a Thunderer whistle and 2016 rule book – we do sell if required.

All umpires MUST wear a white skirt (or shorts if male) with their green polos, have a Thunderer Whistle and the NEW 2016 Rule Book – these are all available for purchase at the umpire’s office along with a selection of other optional clothing.

Is there an age barrier?

No, we strongly encourage mature umpires to come through our program.

Over the last few years we have managed to attract a number of adults who have enjoyed and successfully progressed through the program.

Junior umpires should be born in 2004 (turning 13 in 2017), those born after 2004 are welcome to attend the training sessions and if they are deemed able to control a match they will be accepted into the program. Junior umpires MUST have completed a season playing in full rules to be eligible.
